Long before Hawaiʻi became a destination, before hotels lined its beaches, and before the modern world arrived, these islands were home to a thriving kingdom where ancestors were honored, genealogy was treasured, and every family understood that their story began generations before them. It is from this rich history that Nāpali Collective was born.
In the early 1830s, on the island of Maui, a little Hawaiian girl was born. Her name was Nāpali OʻKeolau Poupou. Born to OʻKeolau Poupou and Kaʻiwimawaho, she came from respected Native Hawaiian families whose roots stretched deep into the fertile lands of Kula and Lahaina. As she grew, the Hawaiian Kingdom began to change. Whaling ships filled Lahaina Harbor, and people from distant lands arrived on Hawaiian shores. Among them was a young man from New York named Flavius Joseph Cook. Bound for California during the Gold Rush, storms carried his ship instead to Maui, where he met Nāpali. Together, they built a family whose story now spans nearly two centuries.
Nāpali was the last full-blooded Kanaka ʻŌiwi in our direct family line. Her strength, resilience, grace, and unwavering aloha became woven into every generation that followed—including my own. It is because of her that Nāpali Collective exists. Naming our company after my great-great-grandmother is far more than honoring a family name; it is a promise to preserve her legacy and celebrate the values she embodied—family, beauty, generosity, craftsmanship, resilience, and aloha.
